Last Blog

Jour 2 allowed me to more fully develop my level of media literacy and i feel i am far more aware of how the different types of media started, developed, the controversies they can bring up, as well as many terms that go along with the different types of media. I realize now also that media is more slanted in certain directions than i thought or was aware and to not fully believe everything that you here said through the media. I view the media now with more of a cautious approach and when i want details on a certain story like the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, i try and view it from multiple perspectives and on multiple different sources and sites. I see now also how the media message and how pr and advertising are not as legitament or trustworthy as i thought. I see now how only certain aspects in news are brought up, how agencies target certain age groups , and often add titles such as in the food industry that trick you such as the word "Wholesome". Also that companies use ads that draw in kids and young people and make their product look exciting, fun, and healthy when in fact the product is terrible for you such as Jack in the Box. heres a video on food advertising as an example. Overall i thought this class was very interesting and it taught me alot about how the media works and the truths about it !! I thought it was a great class to take!

media law and ethics

In looking for media law and ethics scandals from 2010 i found there were actually a fair amount of libel cases. One case i found conscerning this was a case involving a police officer who was falsly accused of aiding a criminal group by giving them classified information. The officer ended up sueing the newspaper on a charge of libel and won the case with the paper paying a sum of money and publishing an appology letter. here is a link to the libel scandal .

Propaganda and advertising

In the media today whether it be television, magazines, the radio , or online we are bombarded with advertising and propaganda techniques used in that advertising to try and sway us as consumers towards that product. Basically all advertising has propaganda and one product that i found that is a great example of using propaganda techniques is Hydroxycut(Link to website) weight loss product. One type of propaganda this product uses is a classic one in many industrys especially fitness and weight loss is testimonials. They use client and consumer statements that explain how well the product is and how well it works as well as showing pictures before they took the product and picture after the product was used. Hydroxycut also uses the bandwagon technique by placing "#1 selling weight loss product in America" which makes consumers want to but the product simply to be apart of the highest selling and the product that the majority of people looking for fat burners are buying. This technique is used to comfort people in knowing they are taking a product that is widely used and that the majority of others trust in. These are just two techniques used and taken advantage of in the many propaganda techniques used by this product.

internet

I use the internet everyday and for many different reasons. I use it mainly for research on different subjects but i also use it to do shopping for holidays and gifts. I personally do not use it for any type of gaming or things like that, but my brother who is in middle school, uses it for online gaming such as "Call of Duty" and "World of Warcraft." The games take a huge chunk of time everyday from him and it sometimes gets in the way of school work and family time. He plays for multiple hours at a time and it gives him headaches, as well as causes arguements between him and our parents. One site he ironically loves to go to is addictinggames.com which he loves playing on. I think the internet is a great tool for looking at information, learning, and buying products at a low price, but in some cases it can cause problems and affect you negatively.

Favorite Movies

In 2010 and in the beginning of 2011 there have been many movies that have came out. I enjoy watching movies and have been fortunate enough to view many. My favorite movie in the past year was "Inception" directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. It is a movie that was excellent due to it's action, the mystery involved, and i loved trying to solve the movie as the director makes it very interesting and keeps your attention throughout the entire film. Inception has a great plot and the special effect are excellent and look amazingly realistic. The actors were exceptional in the movie and made it feel as though i myself was in the scenarios being acted out.I was able to see the film in theatres which only made it that much more exciting because of the sound system and the huge screen. IMBD.com has a great description of it and if you as a reader have time should take a look at it, and then proceed to view the film. Heres a sample of the video as well, off of youyube.com
Inception in my opinion was the best movie of 2010, however it is not my favorite of all time. My favorite movie of all time would have to be "Any Given Sunday" which is a football movie with actors such as Al Pacino,Jamie Foxx, Dennis Quaid, Cameron Diaz, and LL Cool J, and is directed by Oliver Stone. I find the movie so excellent because i am myself a football player and i can relate to a lot of the movie. It has great action in the movie as well as has a great music soundtrack and is motivational for me.  There are some very good actors in the movie and they portray a lot about football very acurately , and the acurate portrayal of football is another factor that makes it such an interesting movie.I watch this movie on dvd before every football game i play and it has a important role in my football life. Imdb.com has a great listing of the cast members and information on the movie and heres a clip off of youtube.com that gives a good sneak peak of the movie.

Magazine Proposal

To the Publisher it may concern,
I have a brilliant new idea for a magazine proposal that will go by the name of "Hollywood Buzz". This is a quarterly magazine that will be printed and sent to cities all over the world on the 25th of January, April, August, and December. This magazine will Cover all the information about the latest movies coming out and the specifics on them. We will be competing with magazines that are out there already such as "Entertainment Weekly," and "Movieinsider.com" which is an online publication, however these are no issue. We will, by only publishing four times a year, be able to get in depth information, interviews, and ratings that will far exceed any other publications. We will focus on the movie itself rather than the scandals and actors which willl make the credibility of our movie coverage excellent. I pride myself on the idea that we obtain insider information and get such detailed facts about the movies themselves, that people will again become interested in the actual movie rather than what scandal the actor or actress was apart of last week. We put the idea out to investors and many are already on board. Because we plan to reach out to a demographic that spans from 18 to 40 and because we will cover all movies from independent films to big productions we reach a demographic of men, woman, and hit every genre of movie lovers out there. This brought in Orval Reddenbacher popcorn, Reeses,Snickers, and Butterfinger, as well as Honda and Nike in as investers. Some other potential advertisers are companies like Century theatres, Dell computers, Rossos's Furniture, and Sony. Our team of designers has created the front cover of our first issue and we think it is perfect. We are covering the new "Casino 2" movie which is our main story and thus placed the star of it Robert De Niro on the front. We also have information on a movie that James Cameron is producing and is projected to come out Fall 2013. This Should draw in readers of all ages and we made the headlines different colors to draw the eye of people and get them to pick up the magazine, once they do we know they won't put it down! We also placed the headline about the remake of Goodfellas in 3D which we wfeel will appeal to an older audience who can relate to the original goodfellas and get them to experience the 3D technology of today which will bring them back to read our magazine and find out about future movies in 3D.  Those are three of our main articles but two more articles in there that will bring in readers is the new Disney movie with Justin Bieber as a guest star called  "Anythings Possible" that will bring in parents with younger kids to get them into the pages of our publication and take them to the theatres to see the movie. Finally a fifth major story we are covering is the new 3D action movie called "Bombs over Iraq: The True Story" which has many intense interviews with the stars and even pictures from the making of the movie. We feel this will reach out to the men out there and woman who love action and the portrayal of danger in movies. I feel this is a great opportunity to be involved in the next great magazine and I hope you all will be a part of what's going to be a long and amazing ride.
